Challenges always equip us to be better and stronger human beings, it’s the way we see it and how we realise these blessings from difficult times that makes the difference. If you reading this and going through a stressful time, just know you are LOVED, beyond words.

Ok, let’s talk stress. What is Stress? Stress is anything that poses a threat or challenge to our wellbeing and is a reaction to stimuli called the flight or fight response. Stress is the feeling we have when we under pressure while stressors are the things we respond to in our environment. What are you stressors? Take out a pen and paper and identify them. Understanding your constitution will also help you understand your stress response and how to deal with them. Your constitution relates to your mind -body connection.

What happens to our body when we stress? When we feel under pressure , the nervous system instructs our body to release stress hormones including adrenaline , noradrenalin and cortisol. Stress can be positive as it keeps us alert and focused. When we stressed for long periods or too often this is when those negatives feelings and body responses come up – blood pressure increases, increase in heart rate, headache, backache, neck pain, difficulty in concentration, sleeplessness, memory disturbances, upset stomach and unbalanced blood sugar levels. Stress also depresses the immune system. Did you know that even a 20 minute episode of stress can reduce our primary defense system for 3 days?

How do we deal with Stress?

1) Prioritise tasks, organize your day.

2)Exercise – Exercise releases those feel good hormones. Endorphins act as the body’s painkillers and mood-lifters.

3) Make time for relaxation- try meditating for about 10-15 minutes a day. I start each day with a meditation – it calms my mind for the day ahead.

4) Talk it out – You can talk to a therapist or a loved one, don’t keep those feelings inside. Our support systems are great healers.

5) Keep a Stress Journal – Track your stressors daily , you will begin to identify common patterns and themes, once you identify them you will know how to deal with them.

6) Ever tried chamomile tea? it’s a relaxant herb that has calming effects on the body.

7) B Vitamins – These essential nutrients help convert our food into fuel , allowing us to stay energized throughout the day.

8)Adaptogenic herbs – Several adaptogenic herbs have been shown to reduce the effects of stress and cortisol and improve anxiety symptoms. These include Rodhiola, Ginseng & Ashwaganda among others. Consult your healthcare practitioner to find the best fit for you.

Stress is a part of everyday life, identifying our stressors and learning to manage them is key to maintaining a healthier lifestyle. I look forward to sharing my journey with you.

Love and healing blessings,
